Flag football with a twist... players wear helmets and shoulder pads.
The addition of traditional football equipment allows kids to prepare and transition to tackle football in the future. This equipment also addresses the potential head injuries associated with flag football. Early Registration will be calculated at check out.
Ashburn Youth Football League started play in 2000, and has continued to evolve into one of the premier youth leagues in the state of Virginia. The organization is comprised of four football leagues, A (7th and 8th graders), B (5th and 6th graders), C (3rd and 4th graders) and D which contains kids ages 6 and 7 who participate in a tackle program that is a purely developmental league designed to teach the basics of tackle football and prepare the youth for the more competitive A, B and C leagues and beyond.
Things to Know Before Registering for Tackle Football - Tackle football is a time-consuming activity. Practices start the first week in August for tackle football with Ultimate Flag and Cheer starting 2 weeks later. In order to appropriately prepare your child to play, and ensure his/her safety, participation in practices is essential. AYFL expects a child to make most if not all of the pre-season practices, so that coaches have sufficient time to prepare the entire team for the season. Parents that know their child will miss a significant portion of August practices (more than one week) should re-consider registering their child to play.
Since AYFL is an grade-based league, there is no limit on a player's weight. However, the League does establish a weight per division, often referred to as the running back weight, where players at or below this weight can play any position on the field (e.g., running back, quarterback, offensive/defensive line, linebacker, safety). Players exceeding this weight can only play on the offensive or defensive line. For the safety of all players, they cannot run the ball, play quarterback, or play anywhere other than the offensive or defensive line. They may participate on special teams in designated positions on the front-line only.
For 2016, the running back weights will be as follows:
C Division - 85 lbs and below
B Division - 105 lbs and below
A7 Division - 125 lbs and below
A8 Division - 140 lbs and below
The running back weight is established after the final tryout. The above weights are provided only as a guide and will change based upon agreement with all participating leagues in the Loudoun Youth Football Association.
